#6 Tell Your Story
Share
When dealing with the NDIS, one of the most powerful tools you have is your own story. Many people don't realise how important storytelling is when trying to get the support they need. It's one of the reasons why we created the Calendary because we found that when people tell their story, the person they tell moves on and they need to start all over!
Do you have your Calendary?
Why Your Story Matters
The NDIS needs to understand your life, your challenges, and your hopes to provide the right support. Numbers and medical terms don't paint the full picture of who you are and what you need. Your personal story fills in those gaps.
How to Tell Your Story Well
Start with daily life. What does a typical day look like for you? What parts are difficult? What takes extra time or energy? For example, instead of saying "I have mobility issues," you might explain: "It takes me 45 minutes to get dressed each morning because I can't raise my arms above my shoulders."
Be specific about impacts. Rather than saying "I need help around the house," explain: "Without support for cleaning, dishes pile up, making my kitchen unsafe and increasing my anxiety."
Connect support to goals. Show how the help you're asking for links directly to what you want to achieve. "Having transport assistance would let me attend my art class, which reduces my isolation and improves my mental health."
Don't Leave Out the Hard Parts
Many people feel uncomfortable sharing struggles or worry about seeming negative. But with the NDIS, your hardest days matter most. These difficult moments show why you need support and what happens without it.
Think about:
- Your worst days, not just average ones
- Things you've stopped doing because they're too hard
- How your disability affects your family or carers
- Safety issues or risks you face
Keep It Real
You don't need fancy words or medical language. Simple, honest descriptions of your everyday life will help NDIS planners understand your situation better than any technical terms.
Remember, your story is unique and valid. Telling it clearly and honestly is one of the best ways to ensure the NDIS provides the support you truly need to live your best life.
